Mold-Resistant Paint for Bathrooms: Does It Work?
Bathroom paint takes abuse: steam, condensation, and temperature swings. Mold-resistant paints promise help. Here's what they actually do — and what they can't do.
What mold-resistant paint does
These paints contain mildewcides that inhibit mold growth on the paint film itself. In a steamy bathroom, that extra protection is genuinely useful — standard flat paint in a bathroom is practically a mold invitation.
What it can't do
It can't fix the cause. If your bathroom lacks ventilation, has plumbing leaks, or stays damp for hours, mold will grow on grout, caulk, and drywall regardless of paint. Paint is the last line of defense, not the first.
The complete bathroom approach
Ventilation first: a properly sized exhaust fan vented outdoors, run during and 20+ minutes after showers. Then moisture-resistant paint (satin or semi-gloss with mildew resistance) over properly primed surfaces. Fix leaks promptly — water always wins eventually.
When to repaint vs. remediate
Surface mildew on paint cleans off and repaints fine. Mold inside drywall or widespread growth needs remediation before painting. If you're unsure, get an assessment — painting over a real mold problem just hides it temporarily.
